June 2007

Peruano, Age 12, Sweeps the Competition
Arizona is
unusual in that its show season is more year
round than other states. Other states often
don’t start their show season until April or
May and are often finished by the end of
October. As a result of this the number of
entries at the Carousel Charity Horse Show
can vary quite considerably on a year to
year basis. This year’s show held March
15-18, 2007 was reported to have had over
400 horses entered; once again making it the
West Coast’s biggest all breed show. For
those new to horses it was an exciting
opportunity to observe American Saddlebred,
Arabian and half Arabian, Hackney Pony,
Morgan, Paso Fino, Peruvian Paso, Roadster,
Tennessee Walking Horse, Academy,
Equitation, and All Breed classes all under
one roof, the equidome at WestWorld of
Scottsdale, AZ.
In today’s
horse show world it is often difficult to
distinguish amongst the various breeds of
horses. Not so with the Peruvian Horse. Its
charisma, smooth way of going, and
traditional tack, which originated in Peru,
make this breed of horse stand out in a
crowd.
Camaraderie
was the name of the game of the Peruvian
Paso division. In a breed where there are
approximately 15,000 horses registered in
the USA, the Peruvian Horse World is a small
world. Because of this those involved in
showing often know each other. With 42
horses entered it was one of the biggest
shows ever held in Arizona for this breed of
horse and the first nationally pointed show
of the 2007 season. Approved as an All Breed
Championship show by and run under the rules
of our national organization, the North
American Peruvian Horse Association, this is
an important show for the breed. It confers
a minimum of double points for the NAPHA
Medallon de Plata, Medallon de Oro and High
Point Performance Awards. In addition
champions from this show are qualified to
enter their respective Championship classes
at the 2007 NAPHA National Show, the only
national show for the Peruvian Horse. The
judge for this division, Mr. Charles Brooks
of Simi Valley, CA has judged this breed
extensively both at the regional and
national levels. He is a well known judge
and is carded and approved by NAPHA.
Because
this is a multibreed show the Peruvian Horse
classes are interspersed with those of the
other breeds. Because this show has only 25
classes compared to an all Peruvian Horse
show which normally has 70 classes, the
spacing of the classes gave many of our
exhibitors an opportunity to meet new people
and to socialize with other Peruvian Horse
breeders and owners. While still very
competitive the show atmosphere was very
relaxed and friendly. It was quite thrilling
to see all of the new riders, owners, and
trainers, who were at this show for the
first time. Exhibitors were warmly welcomed
by Copper State Peruvian Paso Club members.
There was a
lot of news to share. Framtalo Limited
Partnership, owned by Merlene and Frank
Sutalo, has recently opened a new training
center in California. They have employed
Arllentar Janic, an experienced trainer from
Peru, as the trainer for this operation.
Frank and Merlene are longstanding Peruvian
Horse owners and breeders and will continue
to maintain their ranch, Paseo Del Traza,
with trainer Oscar Quijandria. Frank told me
“I expect every one of my horses to be
trained so that I can ride them. I
frequently decide on the spot which of my
trained horses I will ride. I expect the
horses to be fully trained and in good
condition. I expect our clients’ horses to
receive this same level of training.”
Judging from the number of ribbons won,
their expectations were met. And yes it was
Frank Sutalo riding his mare DVP
Inexplicable to her win in the Breeding
Mares in Bit 7 & Older and the Breeding
Mares Championship. Their stallion *AV
Silverio won the Stallions Gait Class.
Joy Gould
of Hacienda Sosegado and Jorge Valenzuela of
Valenzuela Training Center have partnered up
and have purchased a new boarding and
training facility in Hemet, California. They
are quite excited at the increased space and
more opportunity to provide training for
Peruvian Horses. Judging by their number of
blue ribbons they are having quite a
success. Owner Jorge Valenzuela won Breeding
Mares in Bit 4-6 years with his mare JLV
Inspiracion who also was Reserve Champion
Breeding Mares, and Luxury Geldings in Bit 7
Plus with his gelding Lorenzo. Joy not to be
outdone won Open Performance Mares and Mares
100% Gait with RSV La Pisquera, and Luxury
Gelding Championship with MLM Conquistador.
Some of our
exhibitors had recently purchased new
horses. Bill Berman of Santa Fe, New Mexico,
has purchased a gelding from La Estancia
Corcel. Having recently shipped his horse to
its new home, Bill hopes to have him at
future shows. At this show Bill and his gray
mare, Jasmina BFII, were serious
competition. Liz and Bernie Potof have
recently purchased a new stallion, Mateo
Suerte, and a new mare, HDP Laura Lena. Some
of you might remember that HDP Laura Lena
was a national champion of champions
pleasure mare. Mateo Suerte is a son of Liz
and Bernie’s stallion Rayo CZR out of Laura
Lena.
It was such
a pleasure to see Juan, Ernesto, and
Humberto Sandigo at this show. While we have
not seen them for awhile we appreciated
their having taken time out from their very
large ranch in Yuma AZ, Fundo Berseeba. Some
of you might not know that Ernesto is also a
veterinarian with a thriving practice. Their
nephew Daniel Sandigo, a junior exhibitor
gave the adults a run for their money. Their
stallion, ERB Sensacion won 3rd
in the Breeding Stallions 4- 6 Years Old.
Thanks guys for coming!
Arizona’s
own Oscar Campo of Rancho Dona Delia of
Tucson AZ exhibited his recently imported
stallion from Peru, JLR Gran Senor. This
stallion strutted his stuff by winning the
Breeding Stallions in Bit 4-6 years old. A
great ride by his trainer Nazario
Vallafuerte.
Louise
Clarke and her wining mare, RDLF Aniversaria,
once again demonstrated their award winning
ways by not only winning their qualifying
classes but winning Champion in the Amateur
Performance Championship and Reserve
Champion in the Open Performance
Championship Class.
The trend
has been in past years to have more horses
in the 4-6 year age group than in the 7 and
older classes. Oftentimes horses who have
won prestigious titles in that age group are
often retired from the show ring, never to
be seen again. Some people mistakenly think
that these are not strong horses and
therefore do not compete in their older
years. Rancho de la Florecita is here to
prove them wrong. While owners Brian and
Terry often exhibit their younger horses as
well and effectively they were not afraid to
put their National Champion RDLF Sol Peruano,
to the test. This stallion was the PPHRNA
National Show 2001 Best Gaited Horse of Show
and has won many Champion and Champion
titles for Best Gaited Horse of Show and
Breeding Stallions. Even though he is 12
years old he is still in his prime and is a
serious contender. He won first in Breeding
Stallions 7 and Older, 2nd in
Stallions Gait, Champion Breeding Stallion,
and Best Gaited Horse of Show. To his owners
and longtime trainer, Andres del Solar, we
salute you. Congratulations! He is a
magnificent horse to watch. I remember a few
years ago at this same show seeing him and
his son JDS Mannatial in competition, what
an awesome sight. Their horse RDLF Reflejo
also won the Luxury Geldings in Bit 4-6
Years Old and Open Performance Geldings
Joining us
for the first time at his show were Richard
Ubillus of R.U.S. Ranch, Edward Levin, Joyce
Newman, Esther Holubiczko, Daniel Sandigo,
and Kathy Haynes. Kathy braved all of the
cold weather coming from Idaho. While not
having had a lot of prior show experience
both she and her mare Minera were 2nd
in the Silver Fox Amateur to Ride class.
Richard’s Gelding RDS Desierto Del Peru won
the geldings Zootechnico. Thanks to all of
you for joining us. We hope you had a good
time.
Nicole
Pichel of California rejoined us this year
and what a show it was for her and her mare
DJG La Patrona. She was 2nd in
Performance in Bit Amateur to Ride, 4th
Mares Performance Open and Reserve Champion
Amateur Performance.
Along with
doing a ton of work for the show in
organizing and distributing the ribbons for
the classes, Stephanie Garafola found time
to exhibit her gelding Bailador De
Viento.They were 4th in Geldings
Performance and 2nd in Luxury
Geldings 7 and Older in Bit. In addition she
was a great help to Kathy Haynes. Thanks
Stephanie for all of your help.
Along with
working behind the scenes to make sure
things were going smoothly for the Peruvian
owners and exhibitors, breed representatives
Bill and Becky Chase also had horses at the
show. While Becky was manning the horses at
the show Bill was driving back and forth to
attend to the other 17 horses at their
ranch. Their stallion WF Prodigio won 3rd
in the stallions zootechnico and 4th
in Breeding Stallions 4-6, and their gelding
CCF Tango Tango was 3rd in
geldings performance and 4th in
geldings gait. They commented “This is the
first year in the 15 years that we have been
showing that one of the other of us has not
actually been riding one of our horses. Our
favorite horse, BBC Sirocco has just
recovered from a long lay-up due to an
injury and we are returning him to riding
slowly.”
No show is
possible without its sponsors and workers.
We wish to thank the following for their
sponsorship: Paseo Del Traza, D Ranch,
Caballos De BBC L.L.C., Kim and Jacobs, and
the Copper State Peruvian Paso Club.
We wish to
thank Kim Jacobs, Julia Shepherd, Tina
Waddell, and Diane Reid and family for
baking in the sun volunteering.
Thanks to
all of the Copper State Peruvian Paso club
members for being there to cheer us on and
meeting and greeting people. Thanks to
Vilora Marshall for making the arrangements
for the get together dinner on Friday
evening.
Thanks to
all of you who came, exhibited, watched,
gave money, and overall had a good time.
Even though in years past we have often had
pouring rain at this show, this year we only
had to contend with 90 degree heat.
Special
thanks go to Norm Freeman and Lynn Trenery
who had the vision and spent countless hours
on making this show not only happen but be
the success it clearly was.
